What Is Official Betting?

Official betting is a form of sports wagering that takes place within legal frameworks set by the governing body of the sport. It involves the centralized monitoring of bets placed by bookmakers and is used to identify suspicious activity. The governing body will then conduct an investigation and, if necessary, penalize the violators. In some cases, the governing body may prohibit betting on certain teams or events, while in others it will not. The rules governing official betting vary from state to state.

New Hampshire joined the ranks of states with legal sportsbooks in 2021 and offers a mobile app that allows bettors to make bets anywhere in the state. In addition, the NH Lottery has signed a six-year contract with DraftKings for its sportsbook platform. The Lottery offers bets on all in-state collegiate games and events, including player props.

Despite the fact that the Supreme Court overturned the federal ban on sports betting, the NFL still has rules in place to protect its integrity and the health of its players. NFL players are prohibited from placing bets on NFL events at legal sportsbooks while at team or league facilities or while on a road trip with their team.

The NBA has similar rules for its players. The collective bargaining agreement stipulates that the league’s players, employees and coaches cannot gamble on any NBA game, but they are allowed to bet on non-NBA events if it’s legal where they are.
