Unofficial Sports Betting Regulations in Indiana

Sports betting is highly regulated at the state level and all states have established rigorous licensing regimes to ensure game integrity and consumer protection. However, some bookmakers are skirting the law by offering wagers in states where they’re not licensed. These unlicensed sites are called “unofficial” or “illegal” and they’re a major concern for sportsbooks because they can expose them to serious legal consequences.

Indiana has a robust sports betting market and moved swiftly to regulate the industry after the Supreme Court ruling. Its legislation was passed in 2018 and retail and mobile sportsbooks launched in May 2019. The state offers a wide variety of traditional bets as well as an extensive selection of props, or proposition bets, which are based on specific statistics or events.

Soccer bets are settled based on the official result from the competition’s governing body, which includes injury time in both halves but not extra time or penalties. Bets on first goalscorer are based on all goals scored by players who have played at least one minute of the match, excluding own goals.

NFL teams are required to sign a statement acknowledging league rules regarding gambling, and players cannot place bets while in team facilities or on the road with their team. However, the NFL has also beefed up its in-house technology and partnered with integrity firms to more closely monitor the wagering market to catch offenders. This has largely been successful, and the NFL has increased its in-game betting odds to make it more attractive to fans.
