The Official Poker Rules

Poker is a global game, played in virtually every country. Its origins date back to the 16th century when Germans began playing a bluffing game known as Pochen. The game later evolved into a French version, called Poque. This version of the game was later brought to New Orleans, where it was played on riverboats.

In most games, players use poker chips, which are made up of various colored pieces of plastic. Each chip is worth a different amount, usually a set of five, ten, or twenty. A player “buys in” to a game by purchasing a certain amount of chips. A game with seven or more players will usually require at least 200 chips.

The first rule is to keep the cards on view. This means they must be above the table level but not past it. Additionally, the player is not allowed to cover his/her cards. In addition, each player is entitled to have a clear view of his or her opponent’s chips, especially if they are of a higher denomination. Those who fail to observe these rules will have their chips forfeited.

Another rule is to have one player be the “banker.” This person is responsible for maintaining a stock of the chips. They will be able to record the number of chips given to each player, as well as the cash amount. They also should not make any private transactions. If a player has more chips than he/she needs, he/she should return them to the banker.
