The Official Poker Rules

Poker is a card game that has quite a bit of skill and psychology involved, especially when betting is involved. The most popular poker game in the world is Texas Hold’em, but there are many different poker variants. There are also different rules that apply to each game. The rules of poker vary from one casino to the next, but there are some basic rules that all casinos must follow to maintain fair play.

Before the cards are dealt each player puts a forced amount of money into the pot, called the small blind and large blind. These two players are the only ones that must place a bet in a hand before it can proceed (if there is no ante in place). After the forced bets are placed, all players receive their two cards which are placed face down. These are known as their hole cards.

Once the action starts, each player has the option to fold, call the amount of the highest bet made before them, or raise their own bet. If a player raises, all other players must either call or raise. Then the dealer deals the flop, turn, and river cards.

If a player wins a big hand, it’s best not to celebrate too much. Excessive celebration can ruin the vibe of the table and create bad feelings among other players. In addition, floor staff may penalize players that take too long to show their hand after they win.
