The Official Poker Rules

Poker is a card game in which players combine their own two cards with the community cards to create a poker hand. Each poker variant has its own rules and betting rounds, but the basic game remains the same. The goal of poker is to make the highest possible five-card poker hand. Poker hands are ranked from best to worst.

One player acts as a dealer for each poker hand, and his position is marked by a token known as the button (or buck). All players place a forced bet into the pot before each poker deal. During the hand, players may call, raise, or fold. The poker hand is then revealed in a showdown, and the player with the highest-ranking poker hand wins the pot.

The poker rules and etiquette you follow will affect the atmosphere and enjoyment of the game for everyone at your table. Understanding some of the dos and don’ts will help you play better poker, and avoid some common pitfalls.

One of the main issues that poker faces is a lack of standardized rules. This is partly due to the fact that poker has become an international game, and each country has its own unique set of rules. To address this, there is a group called the Tournament Directors Association, or TDA, which oversees the rules of poker for major tournaments around the world. The TDA meets every two years to review and put in place new poker rules reforms.
