Official Poker Rules

Poker is a card game with a long history. It began as a European game called Poque. In the 18th century, the French colonists brought it to North America. The game quickly became a staple of Wild West saloons in frontier settlements.

As poker evolved, different variants of the game began to dominate. In 1871, Queen Victoria asked for official rules for the game. These were compiled by the International Poker Federation.

Although the rules may differ from poker variant to poker variant, they are all governed by a set of international poker rules. Online poker games follow these rules as well.

There are four betting rounds. The first, the small blind, requires forced bets of a predetermined amount. If another player bets before the small blind, the second player is required to call.

The second, the big blind, is the only player allowed to put money into the pot before cards are dealt. This is because the dealer has to monitor player behavior.

After the third community card is dealt, the fourth is referred to as the turn. The turn is followed by the final round of betting. This round is based on a poker hand that is formed with two player cards and five community cards.

The five-card draw has dominated poker players over time. During the Civil War, soldiers in the north and south played the game.

The best hand is the one with the highest combination of five cards. Depending on the stakes of the game, this can vary.
