Official Poker Rules

Whether you play in a poker room or at an online casino, official poker rules are the same. These rules are managed by the professional Tournament Directors Association, also known as Poker TDA. This association includes more than 2,500 members from 63 countries. They include managers of large live poker rooms and independent tournaments.

Poker has ancient roots. Its origins can be traced back to a domino card game played by the Chinese emperor in the 10th century. The game spread in the United States and Europe in the 1870s. It also became a popular game in the Wild West saloons of frontier settlements.

A player can make a bet, raise or fold. The amount of the bet will depend on the stakes of the game. If another player has made a bet, the player can call. If no other player has made a bet, the action is considered to be a fold.

A player’s hand can be made up of one hole card or multiple hole cards. The cards must be visible to the other players.

The rules also prohibit cell phone use at the table. Management retains the right to cancel events if they are not conducted in an honest and fair manner.

Players must have a full view of the chips of the opponent. If a player is unable to see his or her opponent’s chips, that player may be put up for a forced bet.

After a round of betting, the cards are broken in a predetermined order. The highest hand wins. The pot is then divided among the winners.
