Official Betting Policies of Major Sports Leagues

As sports betting grows in popularity, the leagues are getting a lot more visibility into bets placed on their games. The leagues have partnerships with sportsbooks and integrity monitoring firms to enforce their policies and monitor the industry. Those partnerships have given the leagues the opportunity to catch bettors who might be trying to fix games for gambling purposes. The NFL has even gone so far as to suspend players for a year if they were found to have bet on their own games.

The NBA has similar rules in place. Its collective bargaining agreement states: “No player, club or league employee may place a bet on any NHL game.” This is posted in all dressing rooms throughout the league. Players and those who work for a team or the NBA are allowed to place bets on non-NHL events, however. The NBA also has in-house investigations of any alleged rules violations, and it collaborates with regulators, sportsbooks and integrity monitors to ensure it is not being violated.

The PGA Tour also has rules in place to prevent players from placing bets on its events. Players are not permitted to place bets on golf-related events while they are in-season, and the PGA has a dedicated hotline for players who suspect they have a problem. The PGA also has in-house investigations and compliance staff to track wagering activity. In 2021, the PGA partnered with DraftKings to launch its first official sportsbook in Arizona. The sportsbook offers online and mobile betting, with all bets on in-state collegiate teams prohibited.
