Official betting is sports wagering that is regulated by the state where the event takes place. It is available at retail sportsbooks and online and can be placed on a variety of events, from football to horse racing.

Following the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down PASPA, sports betting has become a reality in several states, with New Jersey and Pennsylvania being among the first to launch regulated sportsbooks. Kentucky has now joined the ranks, launching sports betting at retail and online sportsbooks on Sept. 7. The NHL does not prohibit sports betting, but the league has signed partnerships with major sportsbooks in states that have legalized it. These sponsorships give the NHL a chance to flex its brand while gaining access to in-game data that they can share with bettors.

Players, coaches and other team and league personnel are prohibited from placing wagers on NHL games, but they can bet on non-NHL events if legal in their jurisdiction. The NBA also prohibits its players and employees from betting on any of its properties, including the NBA Summer League, WNBA, G-League or Basketball Africa League.

The MLB is working with sportsbook operators and independent integrity monitors to enforce its gambling policies and track betting activity. It has already conducted a number of in-house investigations, and suspended two Isaiah Rodgers and Rashod Berry NFL players for violating its gambling rules this year.
