MLB Expands Its Official Betting Responsibility Program

As legal sports betting launches across the country, Major League Baseball is committed to ensuring that fans who choose to wager have the tools and resources necessary to do so responsibly. That is why MLB has expanded its Responsible Gaming efforts, becoming a partner in the American Gaming Association’s Have A Game Plan. Bet Responsibly. public service campaign and serving as a Platinum Member in the group’s Leadership Circle.

The NBA’s rules stipulate that in-uniform team and league personnel are prohibited from betting on the NBA or any of its properties. However, players can place wagers outside of their teams’ facilities and on non-NBA events, such as Super Bowl squares, NCAA tournament brackets and fantasy basketball. Attempting to fix a game, or offering a gift in exchange for a win, will result in a permanent ban from the NBA.

Sportsbooks are partnering with professional leagues to provide more visibility into bets placed on their games and to help identify potential issues. The NFL, for example, has beefed up its in-house technology and partnered with sportsbook operators and integrity firms to monitor betting activity.

Efforts to legalize sports betting in Oregon and Missouri have been unsuccessful so far. In 2022, California voters rejected two propositions to make the state’s sportsbooks legal. Those proposals broke spending records and ran extensive ad campaigns, but were ultimately defeated by the state’s residents. The topic may return to the ballot in 2023. In the meantime, legal sportsbooks are launching in Ohio and Massachusetts.
