Is Sports Betting Legal?

When betting on sports, you’re placing a wager on an outcome and winning money if your pick hits. When betting on football games, for example, you can bet on everything from how many yards a quarterback will throw for in a game to which player will score the first touchdown – as long as your state allows it.

Sports betting has become a popular pastime for fans, with some states legalizing it and others not. The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the federal ban on sports betting opened up the market for states to pass their own laws and create a variety of betting options.

The NBA’s anti-gambling policy bars its players and team employees from gambling on the league and its properties, including the NBA Summer League, WNBA, G-League, Basketball Africa League or NBA2K League. However, if betting is legal where they’re located, players and team staff can place bets on other events.

PURDUM: The NFL’s position was that a broader acceptance of sports betting could threaten the integrity of its games by giving people incentive to try to fix them for gambling purposes. But there are some theories that say that’s not true, or that the league’s stance was simply to protect itself from the inevitable.

Illinois legalized sports betting in March of 2020, and the online and mobile rollout went live in October of that year. DraftKings, FanDuel, BetRivers, PointsBet and BetMGM are among the betting options available for bettors in the state.
